THE DIPLOMA

This is a fully accredited, professional diploma, designed specifically for professionals who are working with people with complex lives and have experienced Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and/ or Trauma in their adult lives.

WHY DO THIS COURSE
Did you know, 80% of people who access services have experienced adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and are 500 times more likely to use drugs.
A staggering 1 in 5 children have experienced severe maltreatment and are more likely to access services as adults (NSPCC 2017).
50% of major depressive disorder is comorbid to PTSD.
34% of adults who witnessed domestic abuse develop abusive relationships.
This accredited diploma aims to provide service workers and practitioners with the tools required to work effectively with complex trauma and PTSD.

Learn how to apply a systematic, evidenced based, approach for treating complex trauma and PTSD

This course works within the UK Psychological Trauma Society's guidelines for Complex Trauma and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in adults. The three phased approach is considered the gold standard approach for treating complex trauma and includes:

Safety & stabilisation - Addressing “issues of personal safety and development of self and ego capacities (i.e. tolerating and modulating strong emotions). This initial phase focuses on the client's inner experiences, addressing memories, emotions and sensations including flashbacks. It aims to reduce self injurious behaviour, addictions, pathological dissociation and extreme emotion dysregulation. This will then create internal and external safety to disengage the ‘emergency’ brain (limbic system) and to activate the thinking brain (prefrontal cortex).

Processing trauma -Trauma processing (focused processing of traumatic memories). Evidence-based treatments such as Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PET) and trauma-focused CBT have been recommended by NICE guidelines for the second phase of treatment. On this course you will learn STAIR, Cognitive Processing Therapy and Prolonged Exposure Therapy.

Integration - Increasing self esteem, self respect and increasing healthy connections, and exploring and integrating a sense of identity. This phase is as important as the other two and gives an opportunity to re-evaluate current triggers and anticipatory fears towards change.
